Hillsboro Middle School students participated in a community read this spring.
The selected text was Starfish, by Lisa Fipps, a Michael Printz Award Winner for Excellence in Young Adult Literature. The novel addresses some of the struggles faced by middle schoolers, including self-acceptance and acceptance of others.
After finishing the book, students were put into discussion groups led by adults from the Hillsboro community.
The goals of the read were to facilitate community discussion, promote literacy at the community and district level, and connect members of the community with students to discuss the concepts explored in the text.
Thanks to all who participated.
