Seniors enrolled in the dual-credit English 101 course offered at Hillsboro High School through UW-Oshkosh recently took their exploration of survival themes beyond the classroom and into the wilds of the Kickapoo Valley Reserve.
The course, centered around themes of survival, delves into various first-hand accounts of survival situations. The hands-on experience offered by the Reserve's Survival Skills program provided a unique opportunity for these students.
Participants in the program learned about the importance of shelter location and built their own structure using just the surrounding environment and a tarp. Fire-building skills were honed through techniques utilizing both matches and a ferro rod. Students were able to put their skills to the test by boiling water over a fire in metal coffee cans.
This practical application of the course theme goes beyond mere technical skills. Survival stories hold a deep resonance, they tap into the core of human resilience. By confronting the challenges of survival in a controlled setting, these Hillsboro students gained a deeper understanding of human potential and the resourcefulness that lies within.
