Frankenstein Friends

Mrs. Stockwell and Ms. Storkel's second-grade classes recently used an innovative writing technique called the "Top Bun" method to bring their "Frankenstein Friends" to life.

The "Top Bun" method guides students through writing well-structured paragraphs. The "Top Bun" is the topic sentence, introducing the main idea. Three "Detail Sentences" follow, supporting the topic sentence with specific information and examples. Finally, the "Conclusion Sentence" (or "Bottom Bun") wraps up the paragraph by summarizing key points.

To illustrate this technique, second-graders wrote about the Frankenstein they created for the project. Students described Frankenstein's appearance, actions, and character traits, concluding with their thoughts or feelings about this new friend.

The "Top Bun" method has proven a valuable tool in helping second-grade students become more confident, expressive, and effective writers. By providing a clear structure and guiding students through the writing process, Mrs. Stockwell and Ms. Storkel empower their students to express their ideas through compelling stories.
